Sovereignty is a central concept in modern international relations. Much of the development of this idea can be found in the writings of French Philosopher Jean Bodin, who stated that sovereignty was the “absolute and perpetual power vested in a commonwealth”. In last week’s readings, we discovered that Bodin laid the foundation for the idea of sovereignty, and that it was this important intellectual development that paved the road to the Westphalian revolution. Sovereignty is an important concept in the study of Middle Eastern interactions, and especially so when discussing the topic of Israel. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has long been entwined with, and has had a profound impact on the principle of sovereignty and the study of international relations today.
